These Natural Tick Treatments are Dangerous for Pets * All Natural Pet Care
Some of the natural tick products and recommendations out there are nothing short of alarming. Many aren’t doing their homework before selling or recommending products containing natural ingredients that can harm (or even kill) some animals. They often assume if they’re safe for humans, they must be safe for animals. Others research the functionality of the ingredient but don’t realize the effect can be very different for pets.
“Some of these formulas include a large number of oils (almost certainly not necessary) and many include water as a diluent,” reports The use of essential oils as tick repellents for dogs and their humans: a review. “Some have carrier oils (e.g., sweet almond or coconut oil), while some include vinegar or witch hazel. In some instances, the formulas do not facilitate proper dispersion of the essential oils, which can lead to adverse reactions when used.”
Further confusing the issue are the variables involved. Some herbs or essential oils may be safe for one species and not the other, for example. Not only does that apply to using the item on one pet, but it must also be considered for all pets residing in the household. Using an essential oil on your dog because it’s safe for him, may send your cat into convulsions and kill your bird. If that’s not bad enough, some natural items may be safe for larger dogs, but not for smaller breeds, while others may be safe if heavily diluted but not full strength, and so on.

Fortunately, there are some natural tick repellants/treatments that are safe for pets and farm livestock.
“The products derived from plants are particularly attractive due to their low toxicity, scarce environmental permanence, and the complex chemistry that hinders the development of the resistances,” says Acaricidal and Repellent Effects of Essential Oils against Ticks: A Review. “The use of natural products for the control of ticks offers advantages but still has certain limitations.”
We recommend you talk it over with your veterinarian, and never try natural remedies without doing so.
