Helping Dogs Adjust After Adoption: Guest Blog Post

One of the greatest and sometimes hardest experiences with an animal is adopting a dog from a shelter or rescue. You know the dog has most likely endured some form of trauma, abuse, abandonment, or other hardships to be in this situation. This scenario makes it very often a minefield of sorts for new dog parents who just want a great dog companion. Let’s learn how to help dogs adjust after adoption from our guest blogger, Carolyn Osborn of Chiron Energy Medicine.
Newly Adopted Dogs: Potential Issues

After a dog has been adopted, some of the issues they may initially exhibit are:
- Abandonment.
- Separation Anxiety.
- Neediness.
- Fear of all types.
- Insecurity.
How can you help this wonderful dog adjust to its new situation and help him let go of the emotional and possibly physical baggage he carries from his past?
Helping Dogs Adjust After Adoption: Emotions and Memories

First, their emotional state needs to be addressed to calm their nervous system down and out of the Fight or Flight/Stress Mode. If that is constantly engaged, there is no relief or improvement. Then the memories of their past experiences (trauma, abuse, abandonment, etc.) and the emotions attached to them need to be addressed and released so they are not constantly recycling them in their mind and energy fields. Animals are so willing to let go of these old emotions, memories, and beliefs, as they are always living in the present moment. They don’t dwell on the past. Energy Medicine and Animal Communication can address all these concerns and the possible solutions.
Our Personal Experience

I had the opportunity to put this dynamic to the test with a new dog we had just adopted. Kodak exhibited signs of being abandoned, abused, and separation anxiety. He was incredibly needy and insecure as well. After three days of watching him suffer, I did an energy medicine session on him, and I can only say, WOW! What a difference. There was a 75% improvement in his behavior. Much calmer, no whining, and able to relax. I did have to have a ‘talk’ with him (via Animal Communication) a few days later to reinforce what I initially did, and that also made a huge difference in his behavior and adjustment.
Helping Dogs Adjust After Adoption: Emotional and Physical Baggage
The critical part of this message is dogs often come to us with lots of emotional and physical baggage. They are doing their best and can really use some support to be the best dog for you. They only act out because of old patterns, experiences, and hardships.
Patience and Time
Remember, a new dog can take 2-6 months to settle, feel comfortable and safe, and trust you as their new family. Be very patient, kind, and supportive of them as they adjust.
Also, as their new person, let go of “their story of hardship.” The more you talk about it, the more it becomes fixed in your dog’s energy field forever.
Do them a favor and give them the energetic and communicative support they need to move forward in their new forever home. They will shower you with unconditional love and companionship for the rest of their life!
Here’s to a happy, well-adjusted dog!!
